Sun Valley is part of the North East San Fernando Valley. The neighborhood is bordered on the northeast by Shadow Hills, on the southeast by Burbank, on the south by North Hollywood and Valley Glen, on the west by Panorama City and on the northwest by Pacoima, Hansen Dam and Lake View Terrace. Sun Valley was originally named after the Roberts General Store in the town during the late 1800s. In 1896, the community’s name was changed to Roscoe, for reasons that are still a matter of debate. In 1950, the community’s name was changed to Sun Valley after a campaign by local businesses and residents.

During World War II, Sun Valley experienced a manufacturing boom with aerospace giants like Lockheed Martin bringing well-paying factory jobs. Today, Sun Valley is a growing and diverse community, home to many notable businesses.

Sun Valley is served by the 5 Freeway, the Hollywood Burbank Airport and the Sun Valley Metrolink Station, covering many major commuter bases. There are three recreation centers in Sun Valley, one of which is a historic site. The neighborhood has thirteen public schools—including John H. Francis Polytechnic High School and Valley Oaks Center for Enriched Studies (VOCES)—and four private schools.

Sun Valley is also home to the landmark LADWP Valley Generating Station smoke stacks, which has provided power to Valley residents for generations, but will soon be demolished to make way for a cutting edge renewable energy hub.

Sun Valley is also where Councilmember Imelda Padilla was raised and where she continues to reside today.
